September 29, 2009 | 01:38 PM

Pop-rock band Parokya ni Edgar will embark on a U.S. tour which will kickoff at Houston, Texas on October 2, 2009 stretching to key cities located in the East and West Coast before wrapping things up on November 14 at Guam.

The band composed of Chito Miranda, Buwi Meneses, Darius Semana, Gab Chee Kee, Din Din Moreno and Vinci Montaner rose to fame in the early ‘90s during the local alternative music explosion.

Still intact and considered to be one of the few enduring bands that emerged from the said era, Parokya ni Edgar popularized the songs "Buloy," "Maniwala Ka Sana," "Don't Touch My Birdie," "Harana," "Halaga," "Inuman Na," "Mr. Suave," "The Yes Yes Show," "This Guy's in Love with You, Pare," and "Papa Cologne," among others.

Here are the schedules along with the corresponding cities included in Parokya ni Edgar's U.S. itinerary:

Friday, Oct. 2 - Houston, Texas
Saturday, Oct. 3 - Burien, Washington (Seattle)
Friday, Oct. 9 - Redwood City, CA (San Francisco)
Saturday, Oct. 10 - Los Angeles, CA

SHINee's Key Enjoyed His Break

Now back to their full schedule, Key of SHINee seems he had really enjoyed his time off! SHINee really needed this break.

On top of their recent promotion of 'Juliette,' SHINee also took the positions of MC for MBC Every1's "Flower Generation Boys." After being chased by their hectic schedule, it's understandable that they needed a break.

It looks like Key was enjoying his vacation to the fullest. Now legally an adult, Key decided to take his much needed time off by freely roaming around various shops. This photo below was taken by the netizens on September 9th, before leaving to continue their promotion at Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan, at Ahp Goo Jung Dong, one of the greatest hangout sites for young adults. According to the pedestrians, Key was spotted spotting the members with a cup of smoothie. It was later found out Minho could not be with them due to the Let's Go Dream Team filming.

His unique fashion style radiates the force of a celebrity among the others. A chain headband is definitely not a casual clothing, as well as a purse that has Korean letters written on it. He sure deserves a pat on the back for all the hard work and deserves this short break time. I hope this short break gave SHINee members the energy to force themselves with their busy schedule. Fighting, SHINee!

PEP.ph | Martin Nievera and Gary Valenciano celebrate great music with AS 1 concert

by:  Bong Godinez
Sept. 20, 2009 | 6:00 PM

Love for craft prevails even for the fiercest "rivals."

Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano and Concert King Martin Nievera had proven time and again that their supposed rivalry had long been dead. Last night, September 19, at the Philippine premiere of their concert billed AS 1, the two topnotch performers shared the same stage at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds in Pasay City and wowed their fans.

Once again, Gary and Martin showed why they still reign as two of the most enduring OPM figures despite the influx of young performers, some of whom have been making a name for themselves even in the international scene.

The mere sight of the two former rivals occupying the same platform was enough to leave the crowd cheering and screaming in delight. Known more as a balladeer, Martin's self-deprecating humor about his dancing skills kept the entire audience laughing throughout the evening.

First, he made an attempt to match Gary's lithe and fluid moves, he failed; but he managed to earn appreciative applause from the sold-out crowd.

Next, Martin tied a rope around Gary with the intention of completely preventing Mr. Pure Energy from moving around the stage. But the latter still managed to perform impressively, while belting out the OPM classic, "Di Na Natuto," to Martin's amazement and amusement.

QUALITY MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT. Despite all the hype concerning Gary and Martin's old rivalry, the concert—as Gary previously mentioned—was "all about the celebration of great music."

Both were given solo spot numbers, featuring their signature hits.

Martin belted out "Say That You Love Me," "You're My Everything," and "Be My Lady." He also gave his rendition of one of the Broadway gems, "All I Ask of You" (from the Phantom of the Opera), which mesmerized the huge audience. His performance of the showstopper "This is the Moment" served as one of the evening's best masterpieces.

Gary, on the other hand, jumpstarted his set with "Shout for Joy"—an upbeat praise song released in 1991. Then he slowed down with the inspiration classics, "Natutulog Ba Ang Diyos" and "Warrior is a Child."

Martin made fun of the fact that both he and Gary were never tapped to appear in any primetime drama series or movies.

"We are always asked to sing the theme song," mentioned Martin with a grin.

And with that, the two took turns in delivering the theme songs of some memorable primetime drama series, like, "Sana Maulit Muli," "You Are My Song," "Kahit Isang Saglit," among others.

Gary also sang Don McLean's love ballad, "And I Love You So," which was used in the recent film of Sam Milby and Bea Alonzo.

FILLED WITH STARS. Celebrities didn't dare miss such a historic event.

Among those spotted by PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) were Sharon Cuneta with husband Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Ruffa Gutierrez, Donita Rose, Karylle, Jericho Rosales, Shaina Magdayao, Vernie Varga, Vicki Belo, Nikki Gil, Rachelle Ann Go, Toni Gonzaga with boyfriend Paul Soriano, and Manny Pacquiao's wife, Jinkee...

Pinoy Rock Central | Kenyo Releases Their Latest Album "Maharlika"!

Smooth and composed yet coarse and frenzied, sophisticated yet vulgar, safe but dangerous, familiar but somehow different – this is the kind of music generated by the band KENYO.

The band is made up of Mcoy Fundales (vocals/guitars), Ace del Mundo (guitars),JM del Mundo (bass guitars), Cleng Ocampo (guitars) and Ariz Villalon (drums/percussions). They all hail from Bulacan (a province just a few miles north of Manila, Philippines). Kenyo is short for “Bulakenyo,” which is what people from Bulacan are called.

Formed in 2008, KENYO’s potential was immediately recognized that it was soon signed under major label Universal Records, Philippines. They released a trippy-musical scrapbook of sorts in their first project album called RADIOSURFING that spawned the hit songs “Sana” and “Ayoko Na Sa ‘Yo”.. This project also led the group to a successful tour of the United States, in the state of California, on September of 2008.

KENYO recently released a new album called MAHARLIKA. This time, the group writes and dishes out original music filled with zest, their own special sound and poetry.

KENYO’s affinity towards the sweet sound of the past, pop sensibilities, honest lyricism and edgy musical approach makes the band a thrilling experience on its own.

MAHARLIKA – KENYO’s new album out now!

Interview with Mcoy Fundales: vocalist for Kenyo

Time Out Singapore web-exclusive
Natasha Cruz and Carlo Cruz caught up with popular Filipino singer Mcoy Fundales and his band Kenyo in between gigs and got him to spill the beans on his career as singer, writer and TV personality.

When did you start playing in a band?

I started in high school as a fun thing to do with friends. My former band was Orange and Lemons which had a successful four-year run as a group. We disbanded in 2007 and I formed another group called Kenyo.

You were a housemate in Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition 2. What was it like? You mean, do I like being watched? I don’t think anybody likes being watched 24/7. It was pretty hard and uncomfortable during the first week, especially when using the restroom [laughs]. After that you get more comfortable and start watching them back! I guess it was pretty weird, but I hardly noticed the cameras by the second week.

Do you get approached a lot on the street?

Being [in a] well-known band in the Philippines can be a funny thing since the kids don’t hesitate to approach you. They may ask for a souvenir, maybe a guitar pick or an autograph or something. Commuting is very difficult for me. Sometimes I get approached in a public bus or a train, or whenever I stroll around the mall. Whenever I’m out with friends, it can be very embarrassing. People approach me during my private time with friends. But it’s part of work and I’m not complaining. I’d be dead worried if people didn’t do that anymore!

How do you balance poetry, music and acting?

I’m the type who doesn’t like to be idle. And it’s easy to balance these activities when you’re really passionate about it. For example, today I either write a song or a poem. Some are very personal so I keep them with me in my personal collection. Some I reserve for a new album that I’m doing. I might create a book or a collection of poems in the future.

I only started acting in independent films recently because I enjoy the projects. I would usually do film projects if I’m very much sold on the concept or the story. My latest movie project was called The Forgotten War and I was very much interested in it because it’s a movie that talks about part of Philippine history which is not known to many Filipinos. And I’m very proud to be part of it.

PEP.ph | Kenyo chief Mcoy Fundales recalls Pinoy Big Brother experience

by: Bong Godinez
Sept. 22, 2009 | 4:20 PM

Kenyo—the band fronted by former Orange & Lemons vocalist Mcoy Fundales—is back with a new album titled Maharlika, released under Universal Records.

The pop-rock band known for writing melodic tunes is composed of Mcoy, Ace Del Mundo (guitars), JM Del Mundo (bass guitar), Cleng Ocampo (guitars) and Ariz Villalon (drums/percussions).

Formed in 2008, Kenyo was founded by Mcoy following the breakup of Orange & Lemons, reportedly brought about by creative differences and aggravated by management issues.

Orange & Lemons first made waves in the underground music circuit in 2003 with the release of their debut independent record, Love in the Land of Rubber Shoes and Dirty Ice Cream, under Terno Records.

Buoyed by the success of their first effort, the band announced its entry to the mainstream through Strike Whilst the Iron is Hot—the band's second album produced by Universal Records. Radio-friendly singles like "Hanggang Kailan (Umuwi Ka Na Baby)," "Heaven Knows (This Angel Has Flown)," and "Lihim," Strike Whilst the Iron is Hot made the album an instant seller despite the piracy issue hounding the entire OPM industry.

STARTING FRESH. In 2007, Orange & Lemons released its third album, Moonlane Gardens, with the infectious classic-sounding "Ang Katulad Mong Walang Katulad" as its first single.

Unfortunately, tension between Mcoy and songwriting partner Clem Castro over creative and other personal issues tore the band apart. Months after the launching of Moonlane Gardens and with promotions still running actively, the band decided to call it quits after Clem was reportedly kicked out by management.

With Orange & Lemons permanently out of the picture, Clem formed his own independent band, The Camerawalls, while Mcoy recruited old bandmates Ace and JM to help him set up Kenyo. Kenyo's debut album, Radiosurfing, released under Universal Records was launched in 2008 to mixed reviews.

With the release of Kenyo's second album, Maharlika, Mcoy hopes to silence the critics who accuse the band of living under the ghost of its past and "trying hard" to duplicate the success of its predecessor.

"Lahat ng criticisms about the first album saying that we're not really artists and can't write the same quality of songs we used too, hindi namin sinagot," Mcoy told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).

"We wouldn't want to engage in verbal arguments. We just wrote and wrote songs and I guess this album is a testament of that, of what we've been doing in the past. We'll answer our critics through actions na lang, meaning to say, through songs and materials."

Mcoy confessed that he and ex-bandmate, Clem, are still not on speaking terms since their fallout two years ago. This is surprising, considering the small local rock scene where bands are usually booked in volumes during most events and productions.

"I had no chance of seeing him or bumping into him. For some reason wala," Mcoy revealed. "From a distance lang. When was the last time I saw him? I think at this event, we just finished playing in Eastwood and I was saying goodbye to friends and then I just heard they're on and when I look, they're going onstage. But it was not near enough for us to even see each other close."

A PROUD HOUSEMATE. Seeing Mcoy in person, we couldn't help but remember his stint as one of the celebrity housemates of ABS-CBN's popular reality-based program, Pinoy Big Brother...

PEP.ph | Kenyo shows Bulacan pride thru sophomore album titled Maharlika

From being a vocalist of the band Orange and Lemons, Mcoy Fundales joined Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition season 2, but surprised viewers later on when he voluntarily left the house.

After that, Mcoy came back to Universal Records and formed a new band called Kenyo, with his two former band mates in Orange and Lemons: Ace del Mundo (guitars) and JM del Mundo (bass guitars). Their group first released their debut album, a musical scrapbook titled Radiosurfing, last year that allowed their group to conduct a U.S. tour.

This 2009, Kenyo has released their second album titled Maharlika, and they were joined by two new band mates: Cleng Ocampo on guitars and Ariz Villalon on drum/percussions. Kenyo was coined from the Tagalog word Bulakenyo since all members of Kenyo are natives of Bulacan province. Ayon naman kay Mcoy, ang title raw ng album nilang Maharlika has a story behind it.

"I did some research in Bulacan Museum and I found out that Maharlika originated from four Tagalog terms. ‘Yung una po, Majer-Likha—it's a Malayan term that means "great piece of work." Tapos going back pa, meron pa siyang mas lumang Tagalong word na Mahar-Lika which means, beautiful creation at du'n naging Maharlika. Eventually modern [meaning] po natin is nobility, pero, ‘yun po talaga ang meaning niya."

Kuwento pa ni Mcoy, "Noong una po, we we're thinking about it. I asked for a sign kung ‘yun ba ang magandang title ng album namin na bago. Paglabas namin sa Universal Records, we saw a plate number na actually, it's a police officer or own by a Military officer natin, nakalagay Maharlika. And then, going home, I realized na dumadaan ako sa Maharlika Highway. So, all the signs are pointing. The signs we're there na Maharlika."

Mcoy recalls how their sophomore album was formed.

"Well, as you all know after Orange and Lemons, I went inside the Big Brother House. I was invited by the people who helped us din naman from ABS. So, I just can't say no, so, parang pahinga ko na ‘yun, retreat. I did that one.

"When I was inside the house, ‘yung magkapatid, they formed another band. When I got out of the house, nagkita ulit kami, siyempre, nandoon pa rin yung urge to play music and that's when we decided to form Kenyo. Then we had Ariz na pinsan po nila and Cleng who is from Bulacan din to play guitar. Para maiba rin sa Orange and Lemons, dapat lima na tayo ngayon para mas makapal din ang tunog.

"Tapos last year, nagkaroon kami ng project album, so, we decided to do two cover songs, ‘yung Sana and Ayoko Na Sa ‘Yo. It was Radiosurfing na more than a month lang naming na-record and it was released by UR [Universal Records].

"Pero ang hindi alam ng lahat, we were writing original songs na last year pa to a point po na we have enough materials to actually record two to three albums. So, we chose the 12 ones, to put in Maharlika. This is like our second album but if you ask us how we feel, this is our first talaga kasi, ito ‘yung original. Last year was a project album."

Ang description nila sa sound and music ng Maharlika ay, "para siyang kundiman na pinabigat. " May distortion pero ‘yung mga lyrics niya, parang Bulakenyo talaga. Kenyong-kenyo talaga the way it was written."

One of the original songs of the album is titled "Filipina." Si Mcoy raw ang sumulat ng kanta.

"Parang tribute ko po to all Filipinas here and abroad. When I was writing the song, nasa mall ako, e. Nakatambay ako. Parang dito ko lang nakita sa atin na may mestiza, may chinita, may morena, may mukhang Latina, they are all Filipinas, pero, lahat ng ganda na makikita mo globally, parang nasa loob lang ng MOA [Mall of Asia]. Parang nasa atin lang."

Another thing that makes this album special is their first collaboration with female artist Hi-C from Dice & K9. The result is the track titled "Simulan na Natin."

"It's a very sexy track. First time for us to do that kind of track and for me to sing with someone. And Hi-C is now appearing for Playboy magazine this month and we're very happy na she graciously invited to sing with us sa album. It's a very nice track. So, it open doors for future collaboration with other artists."

He's also looking forward to sing with other OPM artists like Rey Valera, Rico Puno, Jose Mari Chan. But what holding a reunion with his former band mates in Orange and Lemons?

"Ah, mas looking forward ako to sing with other artists," natawa niyang sabi.

KENYO RETURNS WITH NEW ALBUM "MAHARLIKA"

Kenyo are Mcoy Fundales (vocals/guitars), Ace del Mundo (guitars), JM del Mundo (bass guitars), Cleng Ocampo (guitars) and Ariz Villalon (drums/percussions). If your memory is still sharp, Mcoy, Ace and JM were part of the critically-acclaimed yet sadly defunct act Orange and Lemons (ONL). The ex-frontman of ONL, Mcoy was also a housemate of Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition Season 2. All members of Kenyo hail from Bulacan (a province just a few miles north of Manila, Philippines). Kenyo is short for "Bulakenyo," which is what people from Bulacan are called. Formed in 2008, Kenyo's potential was immediately recognized and was soon signed under Universal Records (home to Parokya Ni Edgar, Kamikazee, Sponge Cola and yes, Orange and Lemons). They released a trippy-musical scrapbook of sorts in their first project album called "Radiosurfing" that spawned hits like "Sana" and "Ayoko Na Sa 'Yo". This project also led the group to a successful tour of the United States on September of 2008.

Kenyo are back with a brand new album called "Maharlika". This time, the group writes and dishes out original music filled with zest, their own special sound and poetry. The band's affinity towards the sweet sound of the past, pop sensibilities, honest lyricism and edgy musical approach makes the band a thrilling experience on its own. "Maharlika" contains the hit single "Hanggang Sa Muli", a melodic ode to the heroic Filipino overseas workers. The track is one of the most played OPM songs on the radio today!

SHINee arrived in Taiwan via Thailand yesterday afternoon, and greeted both the press and fans pleasantly with their trademark “Hello everyone, we’re Shining SHINee!”

SHINee is scheduled to stay in Taiwan for only 25 hours, and after hastily taking a Korean style lunch in their hotel shortly after arrival, the five boys immediately rushed to the location of the fanmeet without managing to take a bite of their favourite xiaolongbao first.

The scale of the event was comparable to that of their sunbaes, Super Junior, when they were in Taiwan for the Golden Melody Awards, and the fact that fans had started queuing up as early as 4 AM in the morning did give SHINee a shock.

The five members were still relatively shy when introducing themselves in Chinese, but the fans’ high energy during the game was infectious, and Onew even fed the lucky winner a slice of mooncake, eliciting loud screams from the jealous fans downstage.

The boys also played song titles guessing with the fans, and Taemin, along with Jonghyun, who lost the game, took photos with the lucky winners.

The members all professed that they would be spending the Mooncake Festival (Chuseok in Korea) with their families and will be, according to tradition, making songpyeon to mark the occasion.

The fans also took the opportunity to celebrate Key’s 18th birthday in advance, with a cake and two candles atop, and everyone sang the birthday song for him in unison. When asked what was his birthday wish, Key replied that he just wanted everyone around him to be fine and happy, along with having their wishes come true.

In return for the fans’ passion, SHINee did their best during the performance of their songs, and new single . The fanmeet ended in wild cheers from the fans, for their idols.

SHINee will leave this afternoon on the flight TG634.

A Peek at SHINee's Place

So this is how they live.

If you didn’t know it, you would think that a regular family lives in the apartment…..

On the top floor of an apartment complex in the trendy Apkujong houses the 5 boys of SHINee with their 2 managers. Sports Hankok got an exclusive peek at their homey abode. The reporter noted that the pad was clean for 7 men (because they have a cleaning lady/cook who comes in everyday) and that the bedrooms contained bunkbeds and a single bed for Onew. Member Key had pink bedding and regularly checked (and replied) to fan mail on their official SHINee homepage.

Is there anything else we should know?

Secret to Girls' Generation's Jessica and Tiffany’s Body

On SBS Star King, SNSD's Tiffany and Jessica will be revealing their fitness routine workout.

Their trainers Song Min Suk and Kim Soo Chang have both helped the girls keep their bodies toned since prior to their debut and will finally reveal all the secrets behind the girls' perfection!

As you know, netizens have voted Tiffany as having the "best looking thighs", earning her the nicknames "Honey Thighs" and "Goddess of Thighs."

While things like toned thighs will never grow old, trends like the S-line are so last year! 2009 is all about the X-line and Jessica will show off just that! The X-line refers to the upper and lower body, tied perfectly in the middle by a petite waist. Jessica revealed her workout called the "pelvis kick," which helps make her body look absolutely perfect in a pair of jeans. Song Min Suk is the man behind Jessica's pelvic kick workout and commented, "This workout can be done by yourself anywhere, at home or school, as long as you have an umbrella or a broomstick. If you do this consistently everyday, it can help reduce your waistline and your raise your hips."
